Makhana Recipe - Spiced Fox Nuts
Makhana or fox nuts are not just tasty but very easy to cook and enjoy. Made in spices and roasted, this recipe is like Indian popcorn! 
Called as makhana, fox nuts are one of the best and the healthiest snacks in the world! Often enjoyed between meals or in the evening time with the tea, fox nuts are the main snack of Indian homes. 

Makhana are also called as prickly water lily, fox nuts or Gorgon plant is found in East or South Asia. The edible seeds of this plant are what is known as fox nuts or makhana and they are enjoyed as snacks in Indian homes.

Makhana or fox nuts have many health benefits -

-they are rich in protein, carbohydrate, low in sodium and fat

-they nourish the kidneys, spleen and add to bone health due to calcium-magnesium

-makhana are an excellent source of calcium, magnesium, fiber, potassium, phosphorous and iron

-they are a great snack during fasting days due to the fact that they provide energy throughout the day - just a handful is enough for energy during the fasting (like during festivals, etc.)

-they are low in glycemic index thus they help balance energy while keeping sugar balanced

-they are great for celiac allergy sufferers as they are gluten-free

-they boost fertility in men and women by boosting libido, improving the semen quality, helping with premature ejaculation and much more! 

-they are an ideal snack for those who suffer from high blood pressure or hypertension since they are rich in magnesium and potassium. 

-because of magnesium, they also help relax the mind and the nervous system which in turn helps with sleep, reduces anxiety, depression, stress and in turn, promotes feelings of well-being. 

-makhana is considered tri-doshic - meaning they are good for all the 3 doshas (vata, kapha and pita)

-enjoy just a handful everyday between meals or in evening

Do u use uncooked or cooked makhana? Any idea whether 2 cups is same as 7 or 14 ounces?

This is uncooked - like I just took it out of the packet and then made this recipe. So, you will take a pan, add oil and then directly add makhana from your packet to the pan...and so on..

I would say this is about 8 oz..I hope this helps! -Somyata

Ups! I meant like total quantity that I added seemed like between 8-10 oz. from what I could estimate.
