Navel oiling is a very ancient remedy, used since centuries in India. In this article, learn about the benefits of this remedy and how you can use it to your advantage.
One of the greatest advantage of being born an Indian is that you just learn things - without having to learn anything! What do I mean? In India, herbal medicine and traditional home remedies are used so much that from the young age, one learns of these applications. Take for example, this navel oil remedy, which we are going to discuss today - it is something I have known since I was born! I remember my grandma applying navel oil on me many times and often telling me and others about it's benefits. Did she know the science behind this therapy? YES. But did she ever go to some science classes to learn of it? Heck NO!!

What is Navel Oil Massage?

Navel oil massage, also called as navel therapy or navel oiling,is a very old practice in India. It is used for treating various ailments (or disturbances) in the body - simply by massaging the navel with various types of oils.

Ayurvedic explaination, plz?

In Ayurveda, it is believed that massaging the navel (nabhi or tundi) with certain oils can eliminate diseases. This belief is based on the fact that it is our navel that is the life source as when we are in the womb, the navel links the mother and the child to provide nutrients from food to the child. This is why navel is believed to be the energy center, one that if taken care of, can bring balance, nourishment and peace to our mind and body.

The other aspect of this is the fact that our navel is connected to many detox pathways, veins, colon, digestion, blood vessels, both large and small intestines as well as our reproductive organs, it is therefore beneficial to provide oil massage as it is powerfully absorbed and transferred where needed.

Benefits of Navel Oiling -

  • Balancing of Vata in the body - When Vata is out of balance in our body, it can create uneven relationship between the three doshas - the Vata, Kappa and Pitta. This imbalance creates dryness, moodiness, chaotic, weak, tired and irritable. Because Vata is connected to the navel center through the Manipura chakra, applying warm oil massage on the navel helps pacify this Vata imbalance.

  • Digestion help - Because navel is connected to out digestive tract, massaging the navel with warm oils can have a very positive effect on the digestion. Gas, bloating, constipation are cured if regular consistent massage is maintained for a period of time.

  • Detoxification help - Massaging navel with warm oils helps in proper elimination of toxic waste from our digestive tract and therefore, opens up the detoxification  pathways. This is very important as once the detoxification pathways are open, your body will eliminate waste efficiently and naturally prevent diseases.

  • For clear, glowing skin - Massaging oil on navel has been a cure (yes!! a cure!) since centuries for acne, cystic acne, boils, rashes, scars, blemishes and dry skin on the face. It has also been beneficial for dry chapped lips and scarring mouth corners, which are usually prevalent in teenage years. When one massages with warm oil daily on belly button, then, one of the obvious results are glowing and clear skin, along with oft, supple lips.

  • Joint & Knee health - Warm navel oil massage has one other powerful benefit and that is it provides relief from joint and knee pain and stiffness. This is because the whole body, especially our joints ge lubricated and therefore, are able to perform better and be pain-free.

  • Babies relief - Applying warm oil plus hing/asafoetida and making it into a paste can help relieve a crying baby from colic or stomach issues. Simply use this paste and apply all around the baby's navel and see the miracle of a calm infant right in-front of your eyes!

  • Lubricating intestines & normal bowel movements - By applying navel oil, we are lubricating our intestines and this creates healthy layer on intestine for good bacteria as well as fights continuation.

  • Menstrual Cramps - Apply warm oil and place cotton on the navel for complete relief from menstrual cramps. This will help relax the uterine muscles and provide comfort.

  • Keeps our navel area clean - When you do oil massage, one benefit of it would be that it will help keep your navel area clean and free from germs, sweat and possible future infections.

Which oil for what condition?

Glad you liked the article and found it useful. For your daughter, tell her she can start with NEEM oil and even mix a few drops of tea tree oil to heal the infection. That should help a lot! Best wishes, -Somyata

I was looking at the video about using hing for colic, and noticed she said not to put it into the navel itself. Does that sound accurate? Thanks!

Hi Pamela - I do not know who this person is but she is misleading the public and that too on centuries old Indian Ayurvedic wisdom!! Pretty horrible, isn't it?

My grandma used it on me and well, this is a centuries old remedy in India...used all over India for babies with tummy/colic issues. In villages, where the MAIN Ayurvedic wisdom resides, THIS is the remedy - no one is foolish enough to go to the allopathic doctors and give their babies some peptobismol or some medicine - nope.

If I ever have a baby, this is the remedy I will be using and with full confidence. This is all I can tell you - so no, that person is wrong and it is upsetting to me that so many people, inc. Westerners who are eager to learn all these remedies are now going to ditch it and never know its benefits after watching her video..:( -Somyata

Thank you Linda! Usually at this time, I am busy with dinner time and my dogs etc...BUT I saw your comment and wanted to reply right away so you can start this amazing therapy today!

OK. So, there is not much to it except massage till the oil is fully absorbed. Another great and better trick is to brush up on my castor oil massage article and that way, not only are you doing navel massage but also, full liver detox and abdomen massage. Then, if you have a specific condition, use this article to choose the right oils and add on to your navel..:) Much better and VERY, VERY effective - time well spent! with zillion benefits to come..:) . Hope that helps! - Somyata,

This may seem like a silly question--except that it is not. I don't have a real navel. Many years ago, I had a bilateral mastectomy and, since I was worried about implants, I had free-flap reconstruction using abdominal muscle and fat. If I had watched 'One Mississippi" before I had the mastectomy, I would not have had reconstruction, but that is way off the subject. About the navel massage, I assume that there is something about that part of my body--or maybe the chakra...I'm interested to know if you have any thoughts.

I love everything you do and say. Pat Hadden

Aww..dear Pat - first of all, thank YOU for your sweet compliments and believe,me, when I am working hard to provide all this to others, it REALLY means a lot to get a comment or two or some words of appreciation. I am just SO glad to know you love my site and all the articles/recipes I bring to you and others.

OK. So now, your comment is excellent as it raises a very important point on what to do if one doesn't have a navel? So this is how I will answer it - the navel opening we have is part of our birth, as written in the article, it is the part a baby connects to the mother for nutrition, thus being the chakra or center of life giving energy. On scientific side also, navel is connected to the veins/blood vessels in the stomach to provide nutrition and energy to rest of the body.

Now, since you don't have the birth navel, so what?! The center is still there - the body is the same and whole, even though some muscle was cut off and taken away from that part.

Here's what I would do - I would advice that you brush up on my Castor Oil Massage article as its perfect for you! By doing castor oil massage, you are not only massaging the 'navel' but also soothing your muscles, strengthening you liver and abdomen and coating your intestinal walls with castor oil. This way, not only you are covering the 'navel' but also, the whole abdomen and the liver gets the benefits. On top of that, as if this is not enough goodness!, you are also flushing out excess estrogen (bad one) and preventing excess hormones from ever ruining your health. There! You have just turned what you thought was a bad situation into something powerful! Hope this answers your questions.

As for chakra, like I said, it is the energy center. By massaging your abdomen, you are nurturing your life giving energy (the womb). How beautiful are these ancient remedies! - Somyata.

Hi - You need to use castor oil + black seed oil + mustard oil. Warm the oils slightly with some crushed garlic cloves and very finely chopped onions and let the oils simmer on LOW for few mins, about 7-10 mins. You can also add some neem oil - read my article on NEEM. Apply this mixture when it's warm. You can make enough and keep in airtight jar for a week or 2. Keep in cool dry place or if you like, keep in fridge. Use good amount of garlic and onions. For oils, use 1/2 cup each...Hope this helps! Your diet is important too. What are you eating? You can definitely do it with castor oil - that IS THE oil for pcos/pcod. Mix it with some kalongi oil and then warm it every night before application. You can also add crushed garlic cloves and mustard oil. You can make this blend and keep in jar and use daily at night. The castor oil mix needs to be massaged on full abdomen inc. the liver daily until you fully heal. Do check out my Castor Oil Article. as well. It will help you.

Hi Tara - You can infuse some coconut oil with ajwain seeds and then apply it. Warm some coconut oil (1/2 cup), add the seeds (2 tablespoons) and simmer on low heat for about 20 mins...Cover it and let it sit overnight and now, store this in clean, airtight jar. Apply it daily few times and that should help.

You can also add some black seed oil which is great for constipation. You can take it internally - 1 spoon daily. -Somyata

Hello dear Mary - For any dental issues, use clove oil. We also use neem oil. So, you can make a mix in olive oil (about 2 oz.) and add few drops of neem oil (about 15 drops) + clove oil (7 drops) and apply on your gums or where the abscess is...

Do this daily 3-4 times till it heals completely. Hope this helps you! -Somyata.

Hi Anastasia - I am so sorry to hear that you have cancer and you are in so much pain. There is no one oil that will help you heal your cancer or get rid of pain completely but you can try some black seed oil on your navel and see...

You would need a more detailed protocol - to heal/improve your cancer as well as to lower or get rid of pain completely. You need step-by-step guidance which includes herbs, diet, lifestyle changes, etc.

I will be happy to talk to you if you like - you can email me at somyata@thegardenrecipe.com and we can go from there. All the best, Sending you lots and lots of positive vibes - Somya.
