OK. So, you are looking for those 'magic' ingredients that will take away your bodily issues or if you are healthy, then at least, hopefully, help you prevent any sickness going into future. This is the quintessential desire within all of us - to be healthy forever and to die in our sleep. Oh boy! Aren't we dreamers?!

Now, nothing is guaranteed in this life journey that we all have agreed to take but what we can most do is try our best and really make choices that are contingent with our well-being and that of our beautiful, sacred planet we call Home.

So, let's start.


1. Your First Mistake & Your Best Decision - for Health & Finances

Your First Mistake - This mistake is deadly. It will cost you a lot. It costs a heavy bank account, expanding waist lines and loss of self-esteem. It causes inflammation and build-up of toxins. It is a sure way to empty your retirement funds for hospital visits in your golden years and to be a victim of doctors, bills, drugs and well, disgusting, unhealthy habits.

What is this mistake? - It is EATING OUT!; JUNK FOOD!, FAST-FOOD!, FROZEN FOOD!, CANNED SOUPS! (REALLY?!), SNACKS!, DRIVE-THRU'S! (FOR HEAVEN'S SAKE!!), SODA!, BAKED GOODS!, EMPTY CALORIES LIKE CHIPS, PROCESSED FOODS, ICE-CREAM! (WHAT?!)

So now you have decided to cook home-made meals, you are going to need some ingredients. But even before we go shopping for these magic ingredients, you are going to need something even more important - cookware! Oh gosh! How many videos and blogs and 'nutritional or medical' sites I have seen that promote 'healthy cooking' but then I see them start with non-stick! Damn. They get the first major step wrong!!

So, what cookware are we going to use?

Steel Cookware ONLY - Yes. We will be cooking in steel only from now on. Its health benefits are many and also it is ever-lasting. No wear and tear so you will not need to buy again and again. Here are the benefits:-

3. NOW...The Basic Recipe Ingredients for Anti-Inflammatory & Anti-Cancer Diet

What are these ingredients that I keep talking about? In this present day world, we know that humans are suffering from underlying inflammation and diseases such as cancer, diabetes, obesity, pain, swelling, auto-immune, etc are rising. 

So, we now know that cooking with the right cookware is first step. That alone will reduce lot of heavy chemicals going into your body. But now, when we cook, are there some basic ingredients that will help keep our body in alkaline state? What about providing healthy fats? that help lubricate our joints, skin, hair, nails and most important organ, our brain. What about anti-cancer spices and herbs that give immunity as well as a huge burst of color and flavor to our dishes?

Yes...this is what I am talking about. So, let's start. So, second thing we need now, after our cookware to make a recipe is...oil! Let's focus on getting this part right this time. Once and for all.

Cooking Oil Solution - Organic, UN-refined, cold-pressed Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is excellent for million reasons - it aids in weight loss, is great for joints, hair, skin and nails, is great for oral health as it keeps the mouth clean and because of its higher smoking  point, you can use it in making your stove-top recipes.

  • But if it's so great, why was it given bad rap? Let me explain. One word - corruption. When vegetable oil came out, heavy marketing was done to give bad image to both coconut oil as well as mustard oil (used traditionally in India). Before that, coconuts have always been eaten and their oil has been used in many Asian, tribal, indigenous, Polynesian cultures; whew! that is half the world eating coconut oil. When coconuts are eaten, what do you think happens to the oil? Does it disappear magically? NO! It is part of the coconut so that means people are getting both the flesh and the oil when their diet includes coconuts. 
                                                                                                                                         
  • Common-sense - Do you think people around the world are as sick as Americans? No. Why? Because they don't care to read one scientific journal after another and well..then another. Common sense is more used in one's approach towards health rather then worrying about what this doctor or research said. Coconuts are considered a "complete food" and that is because of their antioxidant qualities along with healthy fat. When generation after generation is eating the same tropical fruit and they know that they are not getting obese, cancer or heart attacks, especially like Westerners, then you can bet it is NOT coconut that is bad. It is corruption surrounding anything that helps humanity and the environment - when you are healthy, corporations, pharma and doctors suffer a huge profit. Period. Do you ever see lot of doctors or researchers coming out and saying bad things about canola, soy, peanut, butter, margarine, vegetable, cotton-seed oil? NO! Think again. Most of them are gmo-oils and well...we know the rest, don't we?
 
  • Saturated fats in coconut oil - Yes it contains approx. 90% saturated fat out of which 40% is lauric acid. This means it is great for cooking as it does not oxidize and burn. It also includes medium-chain fatty acids which are great for burning calories and providing energy to the body. Lauric acid is also beneficial for increasing the good cholesterol - HDL.

  • Great for oral, beauty and brain health - Coconut oil  naturally detoxifies. So that means it will help your body flush out waste and this means it is helpful in reducing bacteria like pathogens. Use it in recipes; but also in oral wash, skin and hair care and in massaging joints. It is also great for brain health as it provides healthy fats since our brain is made of 70% fat. 

Money-Saving Tip 1 - Buy 54 oz. of organic, unrefined coconut oil as that is cheaper in long run and you can use it for everyday cooking as well as take some for skin and hair health.

Money-Saving Tip 2 - Order it online. For inflammation like joint pain, eczema, cancer, arthritis, etc you will need to take extra spoonful or two daily so large size, ordered online, is the best price.
 

Money-Saving Tip 3 -If you have dogs, then large is a LOT of saving.  Add to your dog's diet everyday to see its benefits and you will save LOT in later stages of life as this will help their joints, etc.

4. THE MAGICAL COLORS FOR HEALTHY RECIPES

Spices, Herbs, Sea Salt & Vinegar - The Colors of Life


What is one of the most easy, do-able, affordable thing you can do when cooking that is also anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory? Adding spices to your recipes!! They also add colors and taste...oh! the aroma of spices. Nothing like it. So, let's see what we will be using from now on.

  • Cayenne - My favorite! Used both as spice as well as herb. It has fiery taste and little bit of tomato-ey flavor - just a hint. Cayenne has been used in folk medicine for help with pain, coughs, cold, fever & congestion. It is an anti-inflammatory spice. Cayenne is a 'warming-spice' hence it also helps burn heat or we can say calories. It also detoxifies so it is great for keeping our body clean. Contains capsaicin - an anti-cancer element.

  • Turmeric - Probably you know the benefits of turmeric. It is anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, reduces pain, increases mobility, heals immunity and stress, is an anti-oxidant due to its compound curcumin.

  • Cumin seeds & powder - Yes! We will be using both. They are both digestives and rich source of iron. They are great for diabetics as well. Used a lot in Indian and/or ethnic cooking. 
​
  • Coriander (cilantro) powder - Super rich in nutrients like manganese, magnesium, iron, vit K & C, etc. Great for diabetics or just anyone as it stimulates insulin secretion, thus lowering blood sugar. Is also anti-inflammatory spice/herb so very good for those having pains, arthritis, etc. It has carminative quality meaning it lowers gas.

  • Black pepper - We will be using this also in our recipes. It enhances the absorption of turmeric in the body. It also reduces risk of cancer, heart disease and cognitive decline. Great for respiratory issues like asthma. Again, is a digestive.

  • Black seeds - THE most powerful, anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory seeds - you have got to use them! Prophet Mohammad said that black seeds can cure everything but death! This should tell you how respected these seeds are. You will be making recipes with these seeds like my Onion Chutney. So, stock up!

  • Thyme, oregano, basil - These herbs are also used a lot in my cooking. ALL of these are anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory herbs. These herbs also fight infections and are anti-bacterial in nature.

  • Mustard seeds - Powerhouse of nutrients! We will be using them in lentils/beans/soups and some rice dishes. Rich in copper and selenium. Are anti-inflammatory so pain sufferers, start using mustard seeds!

  • Cardamom & Cinnamon- Ah! Super tasty. We will use this not just in cooking but also in our drinks. Both are anti-cancer, cardamom is a diuretic and a digestive while cinnamon is great for sugar. Also, anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial.
​
  • Sea Salt - It contains between 60 to 84 trace minerals. It is also rich in electrolytes like sodium, potassium, calcium and magnesium. Great for immunity. Also, the flavor is amazing!
​
  • Organic apple cider vinegar - Let this be your "fermented health item." Excellent for alkalinity. Anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer due to its acetic acid. Contains trace minerals. Excellent for thyroid health as well as for healthy weight management. It also adds taste and zing to the recipe along with being a digestive as it helps break down food for better absorption due to its active enzymes. It is a "must" for health. Hippocrates called it "the mother of all cures." It has blood sugar benefits as well. So, no matter how healthy you are, make this a "must" in your recipes. Period.

Money-Saving Tip 1 - Buy small quantities sold in glass jar first so that as you get used to these new flavors and mixes, you can then buy bulk next time.

Money-Saving Tip 2 - Also, if wanting organic, then online will be cheaper option.  Buy them together with your other online order like coconut oil and save even more. Either way, spices are SO affordable and a "must" item for health. Get them now!

Money-Saving Tip 3 - Orrr... just go to Indian store or Farmer's market or a bulk spice shop and you can pick up your spices there. Many Indian stores now sell organic turmeric, organic sea salt, etc and it is much cheaper then Whole Foods. Call the store before going and wasting your petrol and time. There!

5. HEALTHY ANTI-INFLAMMATORY GRAINS, PASTA, RICE, FLOURS.

Gluten- Free ONLY


We will be using only gluten-free options. Wheat and added sugars in pasta, noodles etc are known for allergic reactions as well as weight-gain. Also, it is known that wheat has been heavily altered as a grain - it is NOT the same wheat that our grandparents ate. 

So, why not be safe and just enjoy gluten-free options? Therefore, in my recipes, I use only gluten free pasta, noodles, vermicelli, bread, etc and of course, quinoa. Quinoa is not just gluten-free but also great for sugar patients. 

Money-Saving Tip 1 - & a great health tip - Go and get, say, 6 boxes of gluten-free organic pasta, 6 boxes same of vermicelli, 6 of same type of noodles and pick up at least 4 packets of organic rice of your choice. Also pick up some large size of organic quinoa. Now, you don't have to go again and again to store for such important, staple items and you will save time.  Plus, when you are hungry, keeping these staples in supply will make sure you don't do 'drive-thru' or eat something bad for you. No wasting of money therefore! 

Money-Saving Tip 2 - Keep all your new items together in one place in kitchen pantry. So, when you have to cook, you now know what you are to use and also, this way you will know what is about to finish and what needs to stock up.

6. ANTI-CANCER, HEALTHY WEIGHT & ANTI-INFLAMMATORY PROTEIN & FIBER SOURCES

Beans, Lentils, Peas & Legumes


You will find lot of recipes here (even the new upcoming ones) that use beans, lentils, peas and legumes. The benefits of all these are many - from helping in weight loss to providing easy to digest protein. 

  • Rich source of Fiber - One of the persistent issues related to Western diet is that of lack of fiber or we can call it constipation. Same thing. Plant-based protein sources are rich in fiber and help the body digest better in turn.

  • Reduce blood sugar - Chickpeas, lentils, kidney beans, etc are all a great way to reduce your sugar levels. Why not eat more of these? They are therefore not just great for diabetics but in this day and age, everyone of us can benefit with less blood sugar.
​
  • Heart healthy & are a great source of vitamins and minerals. - They help lower bad cholesterol. 
 
  • Best of all, anti-inflammatory - When you eat an animal part, you are basically eating a dead body - that too, one that has been injected with hormones, antibiotics, chemical preservatives and sodium nitrate. Why then won't you have inflammation? Switch to healthier, easier to digest sources like beans, lentils and feel the benefits right away.

Money-Saving Tip 1 - & a great health tip - Get like 6 packets of organic red kidney beans, 6 of chick-pea, 6 of lentils of your choice (french lentils of brown/black color are very versatile so start there) and pick up at least 4 packets of organic black beans as they are very versatile.  Now, you don't have to go again and again to store for such important, staple items and you will save time.  Plus, when you are hungry, keeping these staples in supply will make sure you don't do 'drive-thru' or eat something bad for you. No wasting of money therefore! 

Money-Saving Tip 2 - Keep all your new items together in one place in kitchen pantry. So, when you have to cook, you now know what you are to use and also, this way you will know what is about to finish and what needs to stock up.

Money-Saving Tip 3 - Always soak your beans/lentils/chickpeas in water overnight. This helps reduce the cooking time (so you will be done faster in the kitchen), uses less energy (budget friendly) and washes away phytates - compounds that interfere with nutrient absorption.

7. CLEAN WATER TO COOK & DRINK! Last but not least, make sure you cook with clean water - reverse osmosis or alkaline water is the key. If you don't have a filter or don't want to buy one for some reason, then, just buy reverse osmosis water from the store and refill the same plastic bottle again and again. This is because refilled water has much less plastic then one that is sitting on shelf's for months.

I have steel pots and pans but have a question about cast iron skillets (in particular).

I've been told that they are really good for cooking especially if one uses tomatoes (say, scrambled eggs with tomatoes and onions) because the acid in tomatoes helps to leach out the iron, a necessary mineral, that's in the cast iron.

Do you have any thoughts on this matter?

Hi Nona - Yes, cast iron pans are great.They are durable and actually help with providing iron to the body. In India, we use cast iron a lot as well as steel so yes, do continue using your iron pans.
This article I wrote to inspire people to do the basics first - the most imp. steps. I thought of inc. iron and copper pans but either way, steel is still needed if one is to completely go away from non-stick pans. Steel is also budget friendly so it becomes the 1st "basic" and also very easy to clean - just good eco-friendly soap & water.
With cast iron, just make sure you don't scrub them with a steel scrubber. It will leech out all the iron and destroy the pan. Only light warm water and very light brushing. Hope this helps.

Wonderful info and thank you so much! I adhere to most of your suggestions but living alone I do like to eat out 2 to 3 times a week. I know this is bad but I always look for the healthiest places to eat. We have a local who makes all soups from scratch and makes their own breads.

Somya, after reading this amazing article, which I already practice, I am A DISCIPLE of your site and your teachings. It is so refreshing to have you validate what I've practiced for most of my life because of my mother's wisdom. Like you, she believed that eating real food, not processed and not eating out would prevent illness. She also taught me the nutritious and medicinal value of weeds which most people scoff at. Oh well, more for my 37.2 trillion cells.

I do have a question, what are your feelings on Black Seed oil. I use it in cold quinoa and mixed grain and seed salads, never cooking?

A Tip for Busy People:
When I re-hydrate dried beans and lentils, I do always soak and cook more than I need for one meal. I freeze what I don't use on a cookie sheet. This prevents them from clumping together. When they're frozen, I pour them into glass jars that I save from purchased items. Then, when I need them, I simply pour out what I need for my dish. Easy Peasy. I also make larger portions whent I cook and freeze the remaining portions for future meals when I haven't planned my day very well, or when we visit non-vegan friends (which all my friends are). Do you think the freezing process effects the nutrients in the foods? They are only frozen for a month at the most.

Thank you for this amazing article, I pray it reaches many people so that we can see a decline in unnecessary illnesses. In my opinion the cancer runs and bike rides to raise money for research are not necessary. We already have the answer to health, God provided it and now you have laid it all out so WONDERFULLY. Thank you JoAnne for this wonderful comment and for giving new, fruitful ideas to my readers - you are always welcome to post your ideas here on TGR website..:) In fact, I really encourage you coz you REALLY have lot of knowledge and I also thank your mother for such wisdom that she has passed down to you.

As for black seed oil, yes, take it! It is good both ways but personally, which you probably know by now, I use black SEEDS for cooking and flavoring the recipes and black seeds oil - if I wanted to use in recipes, I would add at end, just like you.

BTW, great perspective on cancer runs/bike rides. The most FUNNY thing is that the companies sponsoring these events are the very same companies that are creating cancer - toxic cosmetic companies, soda companies, processed foods co. etc. And yes, the cure for cancer has existed since million years but in West, it has been forbidden due to the mere fact that there is more money in greed and fear. Very unfortunate.

Hello Somyata, I am fairly new to your site, but I love your recipe ideas. One question. I have been vegetarian for 30 years and am now gluten and dairy-free too. I never eat any processed foods etc. But I have been ill most of my life (many issues). You said before that the cure for cancer has been known for millions of years. Please embellish on that point. P.s. you are beautiful.

Hi Denise! Welcome to my site! I hope you find joy and HOPE while searching through my site - the recipes, the articles, the 'Clay Pot Series' etc.

OK. I am going to address 2 of your points to help you more -

1. You have been a vegetarian and now gluten and dairy free. Kudos! You are on right track! BUT, usually, people feel sick/have many illness issues when they are not doing the menu planning right coz you see, eating has to be done in a certain way that from the time we get up to when we sleep, our sugar should NOT rise up and our cortisol hormone should come down...as day goes. For sugar to not rise up in morning and stay stable throughout the day, there is certain way to eat and for full hormone balance in general, you also have to sleep deeply each night. IF you have aches and pains, then I can tell you that you are doing something wrong and your body has inflammation....plus could be (since I do not know your actual issues) your stress hormone, sugar and other hormones are all off balance.

2. As far as when I wrote that cancer cures have been known for centuries, then yes...Humans have had cancer - which is just fast and abnormal cell growth and this has happened since centuries. In fact, it is even documented in Egyptian papyrus. Cures like herbs, detoxification from the forest herbs/weeds, Essiac tea, Dr.Sabi's method, Gerson protocol, Ayurvedic cures along with many tribal/native cures all over the planet, over time immemorial (that many we may never read or hear of..) are there. So, cures are there - it was just corruption that has masked it for longtime. In fact, I don't remember right now...but there was an excellent doctor curing patients...and he was arrested back in time...for curing cancer patients! So, that is what I meant. In Ayurveda, cancer or any disease, is approached via balancing the pittas, perfecting the digestive health and supporting the lymph + full body detoxification! That is all there is - cancer is NOT scary, the corruption, the greed and the politics around it is scary.
